Legalize gambling in Texas

Gambling has been around for awhile now, originating from the days of the Gods and Goddesses’ such as Zeus and Athena. With showing no signs of slowing down in the near future, gambling has only become more and more popular over the years.
In the state of Texas we have a major problem dealing with the issue of under funding our educational system, under paying teachers and slashing their insurance benefits across the board by millions. Governor Rick Perry has tried to “Fix” the problem by creating a new tax on businesses that acts as an income tax. The only problem is that his solution is just making enough right now to help relieve the situation, only to have it overcome by the rise of taxes of the years.

"Approximately 53% of all gaming revenue comes from out-of-state, Most from Texas. As a result, on average, over $18.2 million per month is received by the state and local governments in gaming taxes." http://www.legalizetexasgambling.com/
An example would be that the casinos in Louisiana are taxed at a rate of 21.5% of their gross revenue. In 2003 Louisiana brought in over 400 million dollars to state and local government. On average Texan’s spend 10 billion dollars per year. Just think what the state of Texas could do if all the money that was being spent on gambling in other states was kept in Texas. The argument people opposed to gambling in the form of casinos is that casinos bring in unwanted drug related problems that also contributes to higher crime rate. There’s also the argument that legalizing Gambling will increase the obsessive gambling leading to more and more people having to live in poverty. This specific argument I believe is ludicrous due to the fact that if someone has obsessive gambling problems then the distance they have to travel to gamble whether here in Texas or in another state won’t stop their gambling habits.

The fact of the matter is that legalizing gambling in the form of having casinos in Texas will in fact aid a lot of the states financial problems in more ways then one, The only things people can say bad about the issue are issues that are present in the state of Texas anyways. Why not try to fix problems that benefit the hard working citizens and the students of the present and future.
If your a student or a teacher, and after reading this blog how could you be against legalizing gambling in Texas? It would be a great way of lowering your tuition that continues to rise to extreme prices.
